Newbies Forum MANUAL: Q + As
abusive and ridiculing behaviour G A
Q   I chose a class from the profile list - it was "Chain Master" and I enjoyed having this display in all my posts but after a few weeks it just "dropped off"   now it's gone
A   Yep! At some stage you went back to your profile page and changed something there, your template, your signature, your website - ANYTHING you change in the profile page then RESETS your class back to zero. You will have to choose a class again everytime you make changes in the profile page .......... sorry Q   what does "registered member" and "official member" mean? I have seen these various titles and stars but don't understand them A   > check here for the RANKS page < A   Yes, you should write down the email address that you supplied at the time of joining AND your password - keep them safe somewhere, perhaps in a WORD.DOC or in your favourite diary. If you forget your password - there is a back up system to help but this RELIES on you knowing the exact email address that you registered with Q   should I use my REAL NAME? A   there are many members who seem to prefer using their real name or number but it is recommended that you use a fictional name e.g. 'van Helsing' or 'Dracula' Q   I decided that I want to change my username A   You can change your username by emailing falkor A   Did you try pressing "search" and entering "handcuffs" ? Q   Yes - I found so many similar threads to that, but not the exact one that I had found before, how do I get BACK to that exact thread? this is a nightmare A   Press "favourites" in the top menu, or go to "All" and from the All Index Page select favourites - [option 3 in ALL] this is YOUR PERSONAL favourites folder Q   wow, just for me? A   yep, this is JUST for your best threads, now when you see a thread you love, go to the bottom of the thread you love so much, you will find 'Favorites' in fairly large lettering - bottom left of the thread, CLICK that line and that thread will be placed into your Favourites Folder Q   then what? A   then at any time you can press "Favourites" from your top menu (or the ALL INDEX PAGE) and you will see listed there all your very best threads
A   well it displays in your profile Q   Yeah that's good but I want it to display in my posts too A   well have you filled in your location? Q   no, I haven't A   well that's the reason then Q   I filled in my location, I put Transylvania and my member no still isn't there A   what's your member no ? Q   2098 A   Sorry only member numbers below 1000 and where a location is completed will be displayed in posts
A   phpBB BBCode incorporates a tag for including images in your posts. Two very important things to remember when using this tag are: many users do not appreciate lots of images being shown in posts and second, the image you display must already be available on the Internet (it cannot exist only on your computer, for example, unless you run a webserver!). There is currently no way of storing images locally with phpBB. To display an image, you must surround the URL pointing to the image with [img][/img] tags. For example: [img]http://www.phpbb.com/images/phplogo.gif[/img] Q   GREAT - I've got a huge close up of my face 900 x 900, wait up I'll get it in my thread right now A   woah boy woah!! the maximum width for posted images is 599 and quite honestly if you stick to 555 wide this would be appreciated Q   what about my 900 x 900 close up, right up my nostrils you can see A   I bet you can too, well get photoshop or some other drawing/ photo accessory and reduce the image width to 599 Q   actually it's not my image, it's held on another server A   ok you can make a request for the image to be reduced, try emailing falkor
A   Yep, there sure is, please print off the banner and poster that was created to publicise the site. Please post them up on a noticeboard at your place of work, or give them to people you think might be interested in the site. Q   ok, is there anything ELSE I can do to help? A   yes there is, as you have a look around the site you may find certain things in the forum that do not work properly, for instance, you may click a link and find that a white page displays telling you that "the page cannot be displayed" or "page not found" Q   yes I found that one of the links on the main site just didn't work, it led nowhere A   PLEASE help the site by reporting such issues straight away - all you need to do is email falkor, this really would help! Q   I noticed that there is a THREAD OF THE WEEK going on the front page, but my threads never get featured on there A   what a shame   why not nominate a couple of threads from other members? they may return the favour by checking YOUR threads out and seeing whether they are good to be nominated
A   Supervisors on the site have powers to deal with such bad behaviour, please check the Q   I found the pbase Gallery! It's great but I think you could do with a few more photos of PCSOs in action A   Yes you're right, we would welcome tons more photos of PCSOs in action, off duty OR on duty!! Q   Can I submit my photos of PCSOs? A   absolutely,   simply send the photos a dozen at a time to falkor - examples - members/ pcsos on holiday, leisure, zzzzs in the back garden, your pet, your car, Your pal at work - ANYTHING remotely connected with our members/ pcsos
A   the author of the thread (or any supervisor) can enstall a poll into the thread by pressing EDIT in the very first POST in the thread and then looking down below the message body where poll functions will be found Q   A post I just made was DELETED and I don't know why! A   If your post consisted of just a smilie   or just a couple of words it may have been deemed too short a message to be allowed Q   No it was a long message with plenty of content A   was it a reply to a post you just made on the thread? Q   Yes, I made one post - then 5 minutes later decided to clarify it with more info A   that is double posting and will not generally be allowed Q   why's that? A   if you need to add further info in a post you just made - please press EDIT in that post, your further info will be added Q   somebody replied to my post though A   well in that case you do not need to use EDIT, you can make whatever reply you like Q   so double posting - the 2nd post will be deleted? A   it may be. there are exceptions, for instance one member is compiling a weekly poem topic, he is allowed to double post because there is a definite system going there and everybody can see it's necessary
A   very often the reason a member gets banned is evident in one of the threads that he posted in. if you are really curious to find out try going to the banned member's profile and selecting find all posts by this member Q   it brings up over a hundred posts! A   well you said you wanted to know why they were banned, you may find that the recent posts reveal the answer Q   no I checked the recent posts, they seem fairly civilised A   in every case that a member is banned an explanation is given on one of the threads that that member posted on but to cut a long story short - in most cases the banned member is allowed to reapply for reinstatement to the forums after 7 days Q   and then ? A   IF the person applies for reinstatement, then the supervisors will consider the matter carefully Q   how many people have been banned from this site? A   plenty Q   why? A   mainly because the person concerned has not joined to exchange views on 'PCSO issues' in a positive manner, their intention is argument/ trolling/ friction/ relentless criticism/ ridicule, even abusive or obscene remarks Q   such a person would be banned? A   Yes, this site is for PCSOs or members who have the PCSO cause at heart Q   they are not allowed to argue or criticise? A   yes they are as long as it is constructive and done so in a manner that ends in a smile, but a person who relentlessly criticises or argues to kingdom come is not really welcome on here Q   what the heck are USERGROUPS? A   click on Usergroups in the top menu Q   OK A   pick a Usergroup and then select "View Information" - you will see there groups such as
Q   What's the point of them? A   Very often each user group will have their own private forum, the usergroups acts as a 'padlock and key,' for instance in "white light" they are the original members of the site and they talk about the old days, but new members cannot participate Q   I want to join 'white light' and read about the old days A   Sorry you can't but what about joining PJIRC? Join that group!! Q   then I can see loads of chat about the chat room? A   No, that group does not have it's own forum but can receive bulletuns on special chat nights. the usergroups are particularly good at
Q   I joined PJIRC but now I'm fed up getting all the BULK EMAILS on chat nights, I really am not interested in that and wish to leave the group A   OK but remember, if you leave the group you will
Q   I don't care, I want to leave the group A   are you sure? Q   YEP, how do I leave? A   Go to Usergroups and select "View Information" then look for the wording "UNSUBSCRIBE" - if you click "UNSUBSCRIBE" you may not be able to rejoin the group afterwards - this will delete you from the group Q   So the Usergroups act like a "padlock and key" to private areas on the site? A   Yes they do, you should not reveal your password to anybody else Q   Why not? A   Because then you are compromising that usergroup Q   I don't care - I want my mate to see what the usergroup is saying in the private forum A   There are various facilities available to the administrator of the site to detect such abuse, you are liable to lose your membership of the group if you allow other members to use your password Q   Fair enough
A   ok, sorry to hear you say that - please come back some time later - your account will still be here waiting for you Q   No I want you to delete my account A   Accounts can be deleted if the member has written 0 posts or has joined solely to advertise a website Q   I have written 59 posts, please delete my account and the 59 posts A   No, this will not be completed by support staff of the site Q   I will do it then A   Yes you can press 'edit' in all of the 59 posts and delete them one by one that way Q   OK I will do that A   There are facilities open to the administrator to restore back all those posts after you "delete them" Q   Why should you do that? A   We probably wouldn't bother but we do reserve the right to apply such facilities Q   OK I am now going to delete all of my posts A   Fine - I can't stop you. Your account will be suspended when this is discovered and consideration given as to whether you should be banned from the site Q   Why? That's not fair A   You just said you wanted to resign from the forums. Deleting all your posts is going one stage further. It is sabotaging the basic communications of this site Q   You just told me I could do it A   Because you physically can do it, does not mean that such action is approved Q   OK Q   when I look in the memberlist I see that I am the 400th member but my member no. is 952, how confusing is that? A   Other forums do not maintain their member lists and the 400th member will forever be member no 400 Q   I don't get it, why am I not member no. 400? A   mainly because of the "non-participation" policy Q   which is? A   Sleeping members :Any person who registers on the national-pcso forum and then chooses not to participate - will after 7 days be advised that their account is liable to cancellation. If after another 7 days the member continues to choose not to participate in the forums then regrettably the account of that person will be cancelled. Q   What on earth is all THAT about? A   memberlists full of people who have never written a post week in week out, are rather in need of MAINTENANCE, the 0 post members should be cancelled - it is not asking too much for a new member to at least come in and post in the INTRODUCTIONS forum Q   But a lot of ppl just like to lurk in the background A   and never even introduce themselves or say hello? Q   they are too shy or don't know how A   Such a member is emailed to the effect that they must participate. 7 days after the email was sent, if the member still has 0 posts their account is deleted Q   so if the 400th member is actually member no 952, that means you have deleted something like HALF the ppl who have registered A   CORRECT
A   Private Messaging can be DISABLED on a per member basis. If a complaint is made, the spammer can be warned that his private messaging will be disabled by the administrator of the site: COPY the private messages into a PM or email to the administrator of the site, with your complaint Q   I have noticed that other members have little pictures under their member names, how do I get a little picture like that? A   Should you wish to choose an avatar - you might want to see what other members have chosen first, if so > click here <
that will show you all the avatars that have already been chosen, but it may taken half a minute to load
then .............. once you have seen the avatars already chosen by other people .... now select "Profile" from the top menu.
go - down - down - down - inside your profile form - right to the bottom where you will see "Show gallery" just above the word "Submit" at the very bottom of the form.
Select "Show gallery" and once you have chosen a piccie - remember to press "Submit" at the bottom of the form or nothing will happen.
A   Yes articles like that form the best part of the main site Q   A pal of mine took some photos of me on my beat talking to the shopkeepers and even some of the yobs where I patrol, I could do an article like that A   absolutely - submit the photos and your text so that the article can be finalised on the main site Q   but who do I email with the photos /text? A   > please check the personnel page for email addresses < - please write down the email address that you want to reply to from there Q   which email address do I use? A   use the first one, if there is no response go to the second one etc. Q   I keep hearing sound effects or short sounds on the site, if this is supposed to cheer me up IT DOESN'T
A   don't worry, we do have proper back up sites, see the very TOP menu and see the wordings "back up site" top left and top right Q   THEY are the back up forums? A   YES, each of these are back up forums A   you will note that these have different urls to the fa1kor.co /national-pcsos site Q   if the forums have crashed it is unlikely that the top menu will then be visible - how will we know the addresses of the back up sites? A   You won't Q   so if we don't KNOW the addresses of the back up sites after a forum crash, how do we know where to go? A   hey I just thought of something, why not make a note NOW of the back up forum addresses? Q   what and then if the forums are wasted by some crazy hacker or through some collosal crash - we can go straight to the back up forums? A   radical Q   are the back up forums run by the same host as the main forums? A   I know what you're thinking! The answer is no, the back up forums are specifically run by a different host (different server/ site etc) Q   have the back up forums ever had to be used? A   yes, for a couple of days, after a crash of the forums Q   the forums worked ok? A   perfectly and then a couple of days later the main forums were got going again and the back up forums abandoned Q   is the emergency thread still there? A   yep still there
A   what was your title? Q   Sucess A   and it was changed to ? Q   Sucess [when the name calling starts] A   Yes your thread was perfectly ok but a supervisor thought that your title was just too short or too vague Q   the part in square brackets was added by a supervisor? A   yes Q   I hate the look of the square brackets, can you take them off please? A   no but you can! if you wish, just press edit in your first post and remove the square brackets, that will be fine Q   I'll remove the whole additional title as well A   no   don't do that, the title is too short or too vague - we need good descriptive titles for our topics please Q   ok, fair enough
Q
Q   I went to read a topic and a message was displayed "This topic does not exist"
A   Sorry, it must have been deleted, try another topic Q   I went to a topic and went to read the thread, I couldn't get into the topic it said "No posts exist in this topic" A   There is a problem with some threads - after a post has been deleted by supervisors the thread pages go out of alignment sometimes, to counter this go to an earlier page in the thread Q   I went to an earlier page in the thread but couldn't get to the final page A   You DID get to the final page but the system is showing 1 page too many because of an alignment error, post a reply anyway if you wish Q   I posted a reply and I saw a message saying "No posts exist in this topic" A   I am sorry about this, all I can say is, your post WAS added and the thread will read ok as soon as a couple more posts are added, I have submitted this problem to our phpBB2 support forums, the problem is known Q   I have heard that we can choose our own background colour in the forums, we can have black, light blue, dark blue, brown, red, pink - we can choose whatever we want A   Well there are a number of templates to choose from yes Q   How do I try these out? A   Go to "Profile" in the top menu then look down the form until you see 'Preferences' In the Preferences section look for a drop down menu titled "Board Style" Select a different template name and then press SUBMIT at the bottom of the form Q   Are there any side effects from doing this? A   Well a number of features are NOT supported in the zoneCopper black background theme Q   what do you mean? A   This will probably be rather subtle to newbie members, but veteran members will notice a number of functions not present Q   why is that? A   zoneCopper provides a more basic presentation and deliberately ignores some features that members may not like, have a look. it works perfectly ok Q   what else? any other problems with changing to a new template? A   Yep! Anytime that you change anything in your profile page, your 'CLASS' RESETS you back to "zero." You will have to choose a class again everytime you make changes in the profile page .......... sorry Q   I was a SACRED ARCHER !   now I have no class A   sorry about that, just go back to your profile and select 'ARCHER' again Q   I just go back to the profile form again? A   Yes you need to select your class all over again Q   I'm not bothering with class anymore, I changed my mind A   That's fine - by default every member has a zero class
A   yes certain members who are on offical groups in this site e.g. TROUBLE SHOOTERS are allowed to display image banners in their signature Q   I would like one too A   sorry, members of offical groups provided with image banners ... and mods only Q   ok I'll make my own image banner for my signature A   please don't - images in signatures are frowned upon and should be limited to the size of a smilie ONLY Q   if I want an image in my signature, it has to be limited to the size of a flippin smilie? A   yes it does, but if you want to display an image banner a few times in your posts that is absolutely fine, it is just the restriction on SIGNATURES that we are talking here Q   fair enough
Q   I have seen a photo in a thread - I need to copy that photo to a thread that I'm posting in, how do I do it? A   firstly there is an image restriction of 599 wide A   so long as the image is below 599 wide you are allowed to do the image copy  this is a demo to show you how to copy your avatar into a post
Q   can I read more about img tags? A   yes there is more on img tags and in fact there are more tags available than just img ones A   writing in different coloured fonts is NOT RECOMMENDED because this forum allows 7 different background colours, if you leave the forum to write in the default font colour, everybody will be able to read what you're saying, no matter what background colour (template) another member has chosen Q   I saw one post written in large lettering and it had a photo in it, how do I do that? A   why not take a peek at the code that that member used to put his post together? Q   Yes I would like to do that, how do I peek into the code that made another member's post? is that possible? A   yes it is but follow these instructions closely A   peeking into another member's code using QUOTE
A   > check here for a tutorial on copy and paste < Q   err I didn't press my BACK BUTTON to exit, I made a mistake and pressed SUBMIT, now what do I do? A   you plonker you were only supposed to peek at a member's code, not make a reply - ok never mind Q   can I delete that reply? it was a mistake A   look in the reply that you made, is there an X in the top right of your post? Q   yes I see the X A   are you sure you want to delete your post? Q   yes I should have pressed BACK BUTTON, my mistake A   ok click the X - it will delete your post Q   sorry there is no X there, now what do I do? A   well you cannot delete the post without an X button Q   well I don't like the post I made, it is just annoying, I made a mistake, surely I can do something? A   press EDIT in your mistake post and delete everything in the message box, then write a few words like "entered in error" or "MOD: please delete, post made by mistake" Q   ok I'll do that, cheers! Q   I used QUOTE to quote what another member said. It reproduced their post in mine and then I replied more clearly to what they said A   yep, QUOTE is pretty good, well done Q   but I wanted to QUOTE what 2 members said from different posts in the thread so that I can chat directly back to those 2 comments A   hehe but you can only press one QUOTE button, what a conundrum Q   what's a conundrum? A   the thing is, to get 2 quoted posts into your one reply do this:
A   > check here for a tutorial on copy and paste < Q   I read on one thread about a scum sucking SPAMMER - what the heck is that? A   well a person who joins a website solely to advertise a product or another forum or website is certainly a SPAMMER Q   and SCUM SUCKING SPAMMER? A   the worst kind of SPAMMER Q   what do they do? A   they are the worst SPAMMER, they join the site solely to advertise a product or another forum or website that bears NO RELATION to the subject matter at the heart of our website! Q   what should we do if we see a SPAMMER doing their worst? A   > notify a supervisor please <
A   that is great but please be satisfied with being an active and respected member of the forum Q   I really would like to be a supervisor on the forum A   well the number of supervisors is kept LOW deliberately, this forum does not need many supervisors, but thank you for expressing your interest at this time
