thanks Gforce but there are half a dozen members who have made "bad performance" reports on this forum's runnings
I was wondering whether running the forums from another website would make any difference
And when I say another website I mean another website TOTALLY
www.fa1kor.co.uk is hosted and owned by a completely different company, so hopefully there will be a performance difference
HOWEVER
there is 1 problem that you may not be aware of
ATTENTION
those of you who have experienced poor performance from these forums, please note that when you first connect to http://www.fa1kor.co.uk/national-pcsos you may NOT be logged in
this is critical
ok LOG IN - you MUST TICK "Log me on automatically each visit"
As soon as you are logged in, pay attention to the top browser bar, ARE YOU STILL IN http://www.fa1kor.co.uk/national-pcsos or has the site switched back to http://national-pcsos ?
if it has - no cause for alarm, but this simply means that you are running the forums from back on the old site again - you are not going to see any difference in performance are you?
If your browser shows that you ARE back at national-pcsos then MANUALLY write into the browser http://www.fa1kor.co.uk/national-pcsos url IS case sensitive
as you specified "Log me on automatically each visit" the forums will now be logged in for you and will NOT switch back to national-pcsos
keep an eye on the browser bar though, to check that you are not subsequently switched back to national-pcsos (you shouldn't be)
I am hoping that the new site will solve many of the posting and replying problems that have been reported over the last couple of months BUT ..... although there are two websites, there is still just one database
Whichever site is "running" the forums, it is still drawing data /sending data to the same database, so - will another website make a difference anyway?? I have no idea!! I am just hoping that it will!!
Please add your comments here - just as Gforce did
e.g 1) No different! what's the fuss?
2) Brilliant!! Much better/ faster
3) Worse! Nothing works now !!

Hi Dan
Thanks for the thumbs up on the second website but there are a number of compromises that have had to be made, in order to allow the second site to host the forums, as well as the first.
Regrettably only ONE of the sites can "consent" to the initiation of e-mails
E.G you may have noticed that you can specify a forum to send out an email, once any person "replies" to your topic, so say a week later, a member replies to your topic e.g the Document / Utility Pouch thread, ordinarily the forums would send an email alerting you to this new reply
Unfortunately only one of the sites can do this. Either the national-pcsos site OR the fa1kor site
Whichever is switched to allow auto-email, the other will fail to auto-email and generate error messages instead
So it is, that regrettably the fa1kor.co.uk site will fail to send emails (because it will initiate a national-pcsos email on a fa1kor site, this cannot succeed )
So, anybody using the fa1lkor.co.uk site for running the forums - if you reply on a forum where members have specified that they wish to be informed of any "replying" you could start to see some horrendous looking error messages, which make you wonder if the whole flippin site is about to fold! No it isn't and you DID post ok, it's just that the settings ask for email, but the system "can't cope with it" |

I found the 1st site painfully slow, the pages would tend to take around 30s to display which was quite discouraging. However this 2nd site is much better, just about instantaneous.
Big improvement for me! |

Hi Martin!! Brilliant nice to know it was worth the effort to upload the forums to fa1kor.co
Well it looks like you will be staying with fa1kor.co from the tone of your post which is fine of course could you possibly do a log over the next 7 days and list all the problems that you see from that 2nd site it you have time please? Any areas of glitch, failed images, error messages and in what situation etc ? it would be appreciated, then with a list of areas to address I can get to work
Anymore comments on the second website you people? |

little bit of confusion about the website address
http://www.fa1kor.co.uk/national-pcsos
the old address was http://www.fa1kor.co.uk/phpBB21 so what's the difference?
weeeeeell for some reason the BB21 version uploaded with quite a few damaged images, I uploaded the forums all over again just now but on a different setting
the result? well as far as I can tell the new upload has no damaged images and is a far better version, hence the different address
http://www.fa1kor.co.uk/national-pcsos is the superior version - which is why I edited the first post in this thread BUT as I said in the post above this to Martin, I would like a log of errors please from anybody willing to make a few notes !! |

Will do Falkor, I'll keep a note of any problems I encounter. Second site is much better!
The only issue that I've hit at the moment is that when I'm accessing linked topics in the posts, the URL is for the national-pcso.co.uk forum which still doesn't work for me. I have to manually note the topic number and access it by changing the URL at the top. Other than that, it's great. |

Hmmm....haven't the faintest idea what all the above jargon really means despite having done a couple of IT courses, but only basic stuff like word processing, never touched computer programming. Be amazed actually if this posting does materialise as I did register with the old site but was unable to post. Wasn't going to bother attempting again for various reasons, but decided as I also hope to eventually be successful with a civilian post with the police, that I might as well join this site. VERY familiar with a some names on here as they will be with me, although under a different cyber handle as ******** is my newer and usually the main one and only one I use if I can now on most forums that I post on, although I've cut back a bit in this area....too time consuming for one reason and others I won't mention.
Logging out now....MIGHT be back if I can access the site to post. Nite then.... |
