carefully select the one plant /fungi/ flower that IS NOT poisonous
as you are passing a coffee shop a woman calls you into the shop saying "somebody knocked over a coffee onto my husband's arm, burning him" you see a man and his arm is badly scalded - you say to the woman
"I will call an ambulance for you on my radio, there is nothing much we can do until they arrive"
"take your husband to the nearest sink as soon as you can and run cold water over the scald for at least 10 minutes"
"hold on - I will apply some savlon to the burned skin to reduce the risk of infection"
"I can apply an adhesive dressing to that arm - I have one in my belt pouch"
all first aiders should be immunised against
rabies
pneumonia
hepatitus B
flu
tetanus
you are on patrol in the middle of a storm when a power line breaks and comes down into a field causing arcs of electricity, soon after this you are called to a collapsed male in the field who is apparently unconscious and not breathing the very first priority here is to:
ensure the casualty is no longer in contact with the electrical current
get enough people to the casualty so that he can easily be dragged out of the field
get the casualty breathing again e.g. by rescue breaths
get the casualty conscious again e.g by resuscitation
you are on patrol along a towpath of a river - the river is high with fast flowing water and swirling streaming eddies in the centre - as a tugboat goes past you see a member of the crew fall into the river off the back of the tug - nobody else has noticed - he does not have any bouyancy aid and sinks beyond trace
I would immediately dive in and swim to the middle of the river, I'm not a great swimmer but I'll save him!
I would immediately radio it in and call/ wait for River Police/ Local Authority help/ Ambulance crew
I would try and attract the attention of the tug boat captain to turn the tug around
I would try and find some rope to throw towards the middle of the river
when you are about to leave the station and go on patrol what equipment MUST you have with you in addition to PPE, notebooks, forms, radio?
plasters and bandages
disposable gloves
savlon or antiseptic
paracetamol or ibuprofen tablets
you are on patrol at a fete when a mother calls you to her son, she says "officer my son has got bad hiccups, what should we do?" you reply to her
"there is nothing really that can be done for that madam, he'll be alright in an hour or two"
"tell him to sit quietly and hold his breath for as long as he can"
"find a paper bag for him and place it over his mouth and nose so that he rebreathes his own air for a few minutes"
"slap him on the back directly between the shoulder blades as hard as you can"
"sit him down and make him put his head down between his legs holding his nose and breathing through his mouth only"
you are patrolling a fete when you see a commotion with a number of people and a dog on a lead - a mother complains "my boy has been bitten by this dog officer!" when you go to render first aid you see that the dog owner has already done so and bandaged the boy's bite which is not serious, you tell the mother
"it's not serious, don't worry about it - just an honest mistake I'm sure"
"Your son needs to attend hospital today, as soon as possible, for medical advice on rabies - tetanus and hepatitus"
"next time you take your son to the doctor, remember to tell him what happened with this dog ok?"
"keep your son off school a couple of days - give him time to recover - he'll be fine"
just opposite the building site a woman has gone into labour quite unexpectantly 2 people beckon you over frantically and one bossy woman says "C'mon mate, this woman's having twins! we called the ambulance 10 minutes ago but it hasn't arrived!" Very quickly you deliver the baby and both the baby and mother are looking very good. The bossy woman produces a pair of scissors and says "Go on, you have to cut the cord now" The afterbirth has not yet come out and there is no sign of any ambulance
First check that the scissors are clean, if possible give them a wipe down with a clean rag, then cut the cord as soon as possible
Use the scissors from a first aid kit only, the cord must be cut immediately, even if the afterbirth has not yet come out
no the cord must not be cut until the afterbirth comes out
no the cord must not be cut even when the afterbirth comes out, Drs and midwives ONLY
As you are on patrol some building workers hail you and call you into the building site. A construction worker has been caught by a falling girder and bricks
He is on the ground with a heavy girder across his legs - it looks very heavy and has crushed his legs badly
The first building worker says "This happened half an hour ago, I tried to lift the girder off him but it was just too heavy. I have now rounded up half a dozen workers from the top of the site, now we have enough people to get the girder off him"
tell the workers to carefully lift the girder off, all the while reassuring the casualty that he is safe
assess whether the casualty has any more serious injuries to deal with, if not - get the girder shifted off him by the workers
do not allow the workers to shift the girder off him.
the area is a dangerous place, if one girder fell then another may do so, nobody can go near the casualty until the cause of the accident has been checked. when checked THEN shift the girder off
you are driving home from work alone in your own car when you see a house on fire, suddenly the front door screeches open and a teenage boy runs out, his clothes are ablaze and upon seeing your car runs straight to YOU, he is WELL ON FIRE, what do you do?
beckon him into your car, there is a swimming pool less than 2 miles from here that you are fairly sure is open this time of day, you can drive him to the swimming pool very quickly
ignore the boy, there are quite possibly more members of his family inside, there is no time to waste, STORM in through the open door and see if you can rescue them all from the raging inferno
approach the boy in an authoritative manner, STOP HIM, move him to the ground immediately and roll him - if possible using some heavy fabric wrapped around him before the roll, with any luck, this should put his flames out
tell the boy to calm down and then set about finding a fire extinguisher, either in your own car or from one of the neighbours' houses or cars, before using the fire extinguisher though, tell the boy to close his eyes tightly
you are on patrol in some back roads when a distressed female shouts from across the street, there has obviously been some trouble
She motions you into the back garden where you see a large man hanging from a tree by a rope, he looks dead
cut the man down immediately
the scene must be preserved - he cannot be cut down yet until supervisors or CID arrive and decide what to do
call the control room and state over the radio what has happened, you can then ask control what to do next
call a doctor to the scene, to first establish if the man is actually dead or not
you have been called to a building site where a worker has sustained very serious crush injury from a fallen girder. You have done all you can to treat the man - now he seems able to provide information and appears eager to reply to your questions while awaiting arrival of ambulance personnel.
I would take his name and address, what he says led up to the injuries, what treatment I have provided, his level of response - pulse breathing etc and record all this in my notebook
no I would leave that to when the man arrives at hospital, for now I am needed to monitor his condition and reassure him
I would then take his name and address, what he says led up to the injuries, what treatment I have provided, his level of response - pulse breathing etc and record all this in my notebook AND hand all my details and info I have noted over to the ambulance crew when they arrive
handing over of information to ambulance crew should only occur at hospital
Further down the road there has been quite a bad crash
A motorcyclist has been hit and come off his motorbike
You notice that he is laying on the road wearing an open face helmet
I would not remove the crash helmet in any circumstances, Doctors or Paramedics only
yes, as it is an OPEN FACE crash helmet the helmet could be removed pretty fast to gain access for checking of possible head injuries
I would assess the motorcyclist's injuries first. If an open airway cannot be maintained for example - I would then remove the helmet
I would call the control room for advice, whatever they say goes
you have finished dealing with a crush victim on a building site, the ambulance crew have just taken him and left behind is a pile of bandages and 1 pair of disposable gloves that a building worker used, all are covered in blood
it's got nothing to do with me, they are left on a building site and that's private property
